From: To: Subject: Succesful firmware and software update of PRISM card Date: Mon, 9 Feb 2009 06:23:57 -0800 Dear Jun Sun, First, I would like to thank you for your article. It allowed me to succesfully update my Actiontec USB WLAN card. Without your help and great overview it would never have worked. I own an HP Omnibook 500: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?lang=en&cc=u s&prodNameId=27093&taskId=135&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=31763&lang=en&cc=us &submit=Go%20ยป and use Microsoft Windows XP SP3. As I bought a new Linksys router, I upgraded my security level to WPA. Unfortunately, the HP supported driver on the website does not support WPA. My mission was thus to: - upgrade the firmware to WPA capable Primary/Station firmware - find a WPA capable driver for Windows XP3 a) Type of card USB Prism Wireless adapter b) brand/model Actiontec Prism Wireless adapter (type USB, build-in) PCI id: USB\VID_1668&PID_0408 c) nicid as per http://linux.junsun.net/intersil-prism/IDtable.html: Component Id's 0x8010 or 0x801F --> sU and pO firmwares needed d) old versions As I only have windows OS, I installed the original HP driver, and used winupdate 0.7.0. No (great) Linux commands thus ... PRI ID: 1.1.0 STA ID: 1.4.1 e) new versions I triied two version with success PRI ID: 1.1.2 STA ID: 1.7.6 and 1.8.4 (both succesful) f) firmware files used po010102.hex in http://linux.junsun.net/intersil-prism/firmware/1.5.6/ su010804.hex in http://linux.junsun.net/intersil-prism/firmware/1.8.4/ Using the windows driver, it upgraded the firmware to ru010706.hex but both new versions work Please remove my name, but feel free to post the content detailed procedure used 1. install standard HP driver http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en &cc=US&swItem=ob-12205-1&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=31763 2/ download and install winupdate: http://linux.junsun.net/intersil-prism/WinUpdate-0-7-0.exe 3/ upgrade the firmware to new versions this is needed as without the the new Primary station FW, I did not seem to be able to upgrade the Windows driver + firmware 4/ found WPA capable USB driver software at www.sitecom.com: http://www.sitecom.com/showdownload.php?id=1201 for the WL-012 card (http://www.sitecom.com/drivers_result.php?groupid=5&productid=133) I could not get version 4.0.7 to work, it seemed to me this was older SW rather than newer... 5/ Modified the WlanUIB.inf file in the Driver\WinXP directory in the section [DeviceList] duplicate the first line, comment out the copy using a semi colon ; change the original line to %USB_DESC_STR% = WLAN_USB1, USB\VID_1668&PID_0408this allows the driver to match the hardware on my HP system 6/ Open Device Manager and upgrade the driver using WlanUIB.inf 7/ optionally, you may upgrade the firmware to su010804.hex I ended up running the version ru010706.hex which came with the support as I assume this would be more stable as (hopefully) tested together. 8/ enjoy secure WPA WLAN connections :-) Best regards and thanks again
