My observations are that neither the 2 zips you link have updated any firmware on my installed MiniPCI card (2511 MP PLUS), using Windows XP. I recall using the netgate link some time ago to install the drivers for a PCMCIA card (2511CD PLUS EXT2), and it didn't update any firmware, either. So my conclusion is that the comment above is false. About firmware versions, under Windows XP using station firmware version 1.4.9, the system wouldn't see all available networks, whereas after an station upgrade to 1.7.4, the problem was solved, and I could see and connect to some networks that I couldn't before (Primary firmware untouched at 1.1.0). Also, some time ago, I used to run several Linux (Debian w/ kernels 2.4.25 and 2.6.8) boxes with either the MiniPCI or the PCMCIA cards mentioned above with station firmware 1.4.9. I experienced several problems with the machines randomly reconnecting to other networks (other ones from the one I was setting up). All my problems were solved upgrading the firmware on all the cards to 1.7.4 (the most up-to-date by that time). For these 2 reasons, I consider 1.4.9 totally unreliable, and I personally upgrade any new card I get with such a firmware to 1.7.4 (with which I have not experienced any problems so far). I have not tried any newer ones either >1.8.x, and I have never messed around with primary firmwares, either. these are my 2 cents on the subject, and I am especially thankful to you for putting up this page on firmware upgrades, 'cause you have really made my life easier several times in the past 3 years. thanks!
